Bernard Gutmann - Lady in Black.
Watch how he repeats the same, exact,
angle tying the whole arrangement
tightly together.
He allows only three straight lines in the
whole arrangement - the straight on the
face, hand and the curtain.
Cover up the curtain at the right, and you
will see how it provides an important
“partner” to the face at the left.
The two hands are repeats of one another
with a small amount of variation between
them.in size and position of the fingers.
Notice how the profile line of the hat and
face switches from dark against light to
light against dark as the line progresses
down the face and neck.
This is a great example of economy of composition
in a two dimensional work.
.
There is nothing in the painting that doesn't absolutely need to be there.
Interestingly, I have not been able to find more than
this and one other example of Gutmann's work on
the Net, nor have I any information on him as an
artist at this point in time.
